Elmwood's Harambee Ministry
Harambee Community Development Initiative
The Elmwood United Presbyterian Church formed Harambee Community Development Initiative in 1994 as a 501c3 non-profit organization to help strengthen and build nurturing families in East Orange, NJ and the surrounding communities.
Over the years, Harambee has delivered a wide range of social services and programs that promote empowerment, self-sufficiency and personal achievement. Today, the organization provides quality pre-school, after school and summer programs to youth ages 2-17 years in a nurturing, academically stimulating environment. Harambee places a strong emphasis on parental involvement and offers a variety of programs and resources to equip parents to play a more active and effective role in their children’s education.
Since opening its doors in 1994, Harambee has educated nearly 1,500 African-American and Latino youngsters, ages 2-5, in an environment that offers a low student-to-teacher ratio; a cadre of certified teachers; and a high level of parental involvement. Over the past three years, Harambee has trained nearly 200 youth on the technical and behind-the-scenes sides of the entertainment industry.
At its core, Harambee is committed to building better, brighter futures. Following its namesake principle of collective responsibility, Harambee operates on the belief that by “teaching a person to fish,” we can equip individuals to transform their own lives, their families and their communities. The organization’s delivery strategy centers on bringing together skilled educators, dedicated caregivers, talented artists, and corporate and community partners to provide highly effective and responsive programs.
